A tempera of few years back..
I did few tempera works in 2006 and this is one of them. I treated powdered pigment with the synthetic gum that used as binder instead of egg, egg oil emulsion or vegetable glue (gum arabic) or any animal glue. The pigments collected from the earth bed have no chemical reaction that found later, even if it is left in the open air. In case of chemical color, since today’s all pigments are chemical compounds that has a common problem to discolor after mixing each other. As a binder the effect of synthetic gum has a little difference than the other binders, it makes slightly a darker tone and that’s not a problem at all. Generally I apply the pigment in a thin layer one after one and no impasto that is prohibited in case of tempera painting according to the method.
